Olympia's Chinatown Historical Marker

Heritage Park
Heritage Park, Olympia. View of Fifith St. and near the location of the future Chinatown Historical Marker.

The creation of the Olympia Chinatown Interpretive Historical Marker is significant because it commemorates the Chinese settlers whose contributions to this city are often overlooked. Many local historians and members of the community wish to bridge the cultural gap between the Chinese and Euro-American settlers who founded and built the city of Olympia.

The cordinators of this project stress how cultural differences divided the Chinese from being accepted within the larger community. Though racial tensions are dwindling it is important to remember the past. Remembering the past helps us embrace and appreciate our community. Today, the city of Olympia offers a variety of arts and cultural opportunities that reflects its diverse history.

The marker will give future generations an idea of the Chinese immigrants' experience in America. The Marker will be located on Fifth and Water Street, at Heritage Park in Olympia, Washington.
