July 12 Community Tours to LOTT's Budd Inlet Plant and WET Center
Olympia, WA – Saturday, July 12, 2025 — More than 50community members—including middle and high school students, adults, and families with young children—gathered in downtown Olympia to visit the Budd Inlet Treatment Plant and WET Science Center. The event was hosted by the LOTT Clean Water Alliance and organized by the Olympia Area Chinese Association(OACA) as part of a project supported by the Healthy Environment for All (HEAL)Grant.
The theme of the day, healing the environment, came to life through guided tours, interactive exhibits, and hands-on learning that showed how clean water connects directly to public health, sustainability, and environmental protection.
We have two groups activity on the visit based on ages.
Group 1: From Wastewater to Clean Resources
Around 30 middle and high school students as well as adults took part in a guided tour of the Budd Inlet Treatment Plant. This state-of-the-art facility treats an average of 12 million gallons of waste water per day from homes and businesses in Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater, and surrounding areas.
Participants followed the path of wastewater from household drains through multiple stages of treatment—including grit removal, settling tanks, biological nutrient removal, and ultraviolet disinfection. Helpful bacteria play a key role in breaking down pollutants like nitrogen, which can be harmful to marine ecosystems if left untreated.
One of the highlights of the tour was learning how the plant turns waste into renewable energy. Methane gas, produced during the break down of organic solids, is captured and burned to generate electricity that powers buildings on-site.
“The most impressive part was how the plant turns waste into energy,” said one student. “Burning methane from biogas to generate electricity powers the buildings where scientists work. And the leftover solids become fertilizer for farms. It’s like a full circle—everything goes back to the earth.”
Students also gained a better understanding of how science, technology, and public infrastructure work together to manage water safely and sustainably. For many, the experience connected classroom lessons in biology and chemistry to real-world environmental solutions.
Group 2: Young Explorers at the WET Science Center
While older students toured the plant, about 20 young children (under age 10) and their families explored the WET Science Center, located next door. This interactive learning space offers games, exhibits, and videos that help kids understand how water moves through the city, how wastewater is cleaned, and how their actions at home—like not pouring grease down the drain—can help protect the environment.
It was a fun, age-appropriate way for younger children to explore science and learn that every drop counts.
